He has worked in the coal mining industry in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. He joined Wesfarmers in 2000 following Wesfarmers’ acquisition of the Curragh mine. In June 2002 he was appointed Managing Director of Wesfarmers Premier Coal and in September 2006 was appointed Managing Director of Wesfarmers Resources.
Stewart is a director of a number of Wesfarmers subsidiaries and is also on the board of the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), the MCA Coal Forum, the Australian Coal Association Low Emissions Technology and the Queensland Resources Council. He was previously on the Executive Council of the WA Chamber of Mines and Energy and served on the South West Development Commission in Western Australia.
Stewart is responsible for the Curragh mine at Blackwater in Queensland and the 40 per cent owned Bengalla mine in New South Wales.
