Scientific support to boost investment in smarter states

Statement by QRC Chief Executive Michael Roche

29 July 2016

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) congratulates Carbon Energy on receiving formal validation from the state’s chief scientist of its underground coal gasification practices.

Yet despite confirmation that Carbon Energy’s technology is successful and environmentally safe, Queensland will not enjoy the economic benefits that comes with building this new energy industry.

Carbon Energy has spent more than eight years and $150 million proving its innovative technology.

The technology was developed in conjunction with the CSIRO, and successfully demonstrated in a process set by the Queensland government and with oversight by a government-appointed Independent Scientific Panel.

In April the QRC was shocked by the unexpected Palaszczuk Government announcement to implement a blanket ban on underground coal gasification, without releasing evidence to justify the rash decision. The decision raises questions for innovative businesses operating in Queensland, as well as the state’s ability to attract future investment.

Now, with science on its side, Carbon Energy will look to continue its investment in other jurisdictions, taking with it potential jobs that could have gone to Queenslanders.
